After your kayak paddle to Nagy's Landing, hit the D&L Trail on a mountain bike and experience the history of one of the oldest canals in America. This is an easy 30-45 min bike ride on one of the most senic parts of the D&L Trail. (A courtesy shuttle is available for anyone who does not want to ride a bike.)
Glendon Dam, or Dam 8, is known as the “Chain Dam” because originally a chain operated ferry was used to transport canal boats between the north and south banks of the river. Later, a mule bridge and causeway replaced this system. The original stone and wood crib dam was washed away and was replaced by the concrete dam that exists today. The dam height is 16 feet.
The Glendon Dam Run is a 3 hour, self-guided, kayak and bike excursion. The Lehigh River is calm and easy in this 2 mile section from Nagy's Landing to the Rt. 33 Sportsman's access.
After your kayak paddle to the Rt. 33 Sportsmans's access, hit the D&L Trail on a mountain bike and check out the Glendon Dam, a great photo spot. Then ride back to Nagy's Landing to complete your kayak and bike adventure. This is an eay 1hr. bike ride on one of the most senic parts of the D&L Trail. Take in a free concert at the Levitt Pavilion, walk along the Hoover Mason Trestle and peer down into the Blast Furnaces, then wander around the Artsquest Campus that holds events like Musikfest and Christkindlemart.
The D&L Trail connects Allentown, Bethlehem, and Easton. Visitors gush over the scenic river views d the quiet countryside saying there is no better riding all over the country than in the Lehigh Valley. Trips on the canal towpath are tranquil with the Lehigh Canal on one side and the Lehigh River on the other.
A little over a mile separates two great universities. Moravian University, Founded in 1792 is the 6th oldest in America.
Lehigh University was founded in 1865 by Asa Packer.
According to The Princeton Review, Lehigh offers a “friendly community-oriented atmosphere on a hilly campus that is beyond beautiful.”
